Food plays a major role in the cultural and religious practices of any communities. When we think about culture, food is often one of the first things that comes to mind. The role food plays and the experiences communities have with food goes well beyond providing nourishment alone. However, many immigrants and refugees facing hardships, finding food that caters their culture can be even harder. ARISE and Shine works with local community growers and assures culturally specific fresh, healthy food reaches the people who need it most and avoids becoming waste. In addition, we provide assistance with proper food storage tips to newly comers in order to preserve the quality and nutritional value of the foods they purchase, prevent foodborne illnesses caused by harmful bacteria and make the most of their food dollar by preventing spoilage.
